Commando Ponchadier SAS-B, B1 Aeronautique Navale

Formed in January 1945 the unit was one of the first to be deployed to Indochina. The personnel came from the Navy and Colonial branches.

The Commando had 4 sub units - B1, B2, B3 and B4. B1 was formed from the Aeronavale and the others from the Colonial Infantry.

Our figure is pictured in the uniform worn for parades. The only item of French issue is the Naval cap. The rest of his uniform is from British and US sources.

He wears a 2nd pattern Denison smock with unit insignia. Note his bullion embroidered Aeronavale parachute wings. His belt is a standard British 37 pattern item, as is the holster.

The trousers are British KD (Khaki Drill).

His boots are US M43 "Buckle" boots.

On operations he would wear the British Jungle Green BD blouse and trousers. His webbing would be mixture of British 37 or US M36 pattern. He would be armed with a Sten MkV SMG, a pistol (revolver or semi-automatic) and a fighting knife (either the famous Fairburn-Sykes or the US M3).
